Superman to Renounce His U.S. Citizenship

In Defense of an American Icon’s Decision

When I started writing articles, I never thought I'd actually be writing a serious column about a fictional comic book superhero, but this has garnered so much attention, I couldn't help but put my two cents in.

Personally, I'm not a huge Superman fan. I was always into more "realistic" comic heroes (if you can call them that) such as Wolverine, The Punisher, Batman and Iron Man, superheroes nowhere near as powerful as Superman, but that was their appeal to me. Three of the ones I named don't even have any powers and need to rely on their high-tech gadgets, their wits and combat skills to fight crime. Superman was just too powerful for my liking.

That being said, there's no denying the "Man of Steel's" iconic stature in America. It's hard for me to not kind of like a guy who sets such high standards and morals for himself... he's like the ultimate boy scout, even if he does come across as a bit "goody two shoes" at times.

Few comic book heroes have embraced good-old American values and morals like Superman has, which is why it is such a shock for many of his fans when he announced in "Action Comics #900" that he was appearing before the U.N. to "renounce his U.S. citizenship".

Blogs, websites and especially conservative talk radio programs (and I imagine some liberal ones as well) have been having reactions ranging from disappointment to outrage over his decision since the news came out, claiming that Superman has become too "politically correct" or has even "turned his back on America". Some have even resorted to pointing out that Superman is an "illegal alien", since he neither legally entered the United States, nor was he officially adopted by the Kents (as if anyone could reasonably explain to the authorities how they found a super-powered alien kid in a spaceship on their front lawn).

Funny how no one seemed to really care about that until now.

I've listened to quite a bit of talk radio over the years, and while for the most part the hosts of the ones I listen to tend to be well-informed on political matters, I'll admit that they don't always get the story right, especially if it's a story that's just recently been broken.

So I was a little skeptical as I listened to the story as it aired on 3 different conservative talk radio programs yesterday. Experience has taught me that there is almost always more to a breaking story than what's being told, so I decided to look into it myself. Surely a beloved American icon like Superman didn't really just suddenly turn his back on America and "gone global"?

While it's true that he has announced his intention to go before the United Nations and renounce his citizenship, it's not for the reasons many are speculating on; he hasn't become more "PC" or anti-American as conservatives seem to think, nor is it because he no longer believes in "outdated" American values and principals and has become enlightened in "global thinking" as the liberals will likely claim.

It stems from the storyline called "The Incident", in which he flew to Iran to show his support for the citizens who were protesting against the Iranian regime (most superhero comics tend to tie their stories into actual events). He didn't say anything, he didn't beat anyone up... he simply made his presence known to the Iranians so that they knew that they weren't alone against a brutal regime. The demonstration ended peacefully, likely because of his presence.

To no one's surprise, the Iranian regime immediately accused Superman of acting on behalf of the U.S. President, turning his show of solidarity with the demonstrating Iranians into an international incident, and a perceived act of war.

In frustration, Superman informed the national security advisor that he intends to go before the United Nations and "renounce his American citizenship".

"I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy" he proclaims. "'Truth, justice and the American way'... it's not enough anymore".

"The world is too small... too connected."

Unfortunately, many critics see this as Superman abandoning America; I don't feel that's the case. To me, it seems that he doesn't want the United States being blamed for just doing what he does outside of the country, nor does he want to be considered "under the thumb" of the U.S. government.

Think about this for a second...

Remember the actual protests that occurred in Iran a few months back, when students pushing for democracy held demonstrations all over the country against Ahmadinejhad? What did President Obama do? Other than some basic lip service that meant nothing, he didn't once show any solidarity to the students who were pushing for democratic reform in Iran. Instead, he simply said the violence against the students "concerned him", but he also assured Ahmadinejhad that they could still do business once the protests were over. At least Superman tried to show some real support. The thought of one like President Obama sending Superman to show his support to the Iranian students is laughable when you think about it.

Considering him and the rest of the buffoons that currently run the White House administration and the congress, would you want to be represented by them? Can you really blame the guy if he doesn't want to be mistaken as a representative of the U.S. government? Would you, as Superman, want Americans who despite your technical "illegal" status by and large embraced you, to be the scapegoats for any actions you perform outside the country that would anger a foreign dictator?

The way I see it, Superman is giving up his citizenship not to abandon America, but to protect it. It's not so much a renouncement as it is a sacrifice, even if I don't think that action is really necessary.

Maybe he should've just put a disclaimer on his Facebook page or something... "The actions and/or statements of Superman are strictly his own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the U.S. government or the United States of America in general."

Anyway, this isn't a done deal yet, at least not to my knowledge. Maybe he'll think better of it. Maybe he'll change his mind after a few issues and thinks of a better way. This is the world of comics... anything can happen.

If Superman can be killed by some freak named "Doomsday", then brought back to life later, I don't think requesting his citizenship back would be too much of a stretch.

So relax, all you comic geeks and talking heads. Superman still embodies the best of America. He has not abandoned us, nor is he embracing any countries' values but ours... he's just expanding his options and operations outside of America. It's not that unbelievable.

We are talking about a guy who can fly so fast that he can reverse the earth's rotation, after all.

Government Schools Recruit Chinese Students to Fill Classrooms

But the Joke Could be on the Chinese...

Public schools, or as I call them by their proper name, government schools, have been so desperate to have an excuse to stay open due to declining attendance that they have actually been recruiting students from overseas to fill their classrooms.

In an article by Clarke Canfield of the Associated Press, it is reported that at least two government school districts in Maine have been recruiting students from China (at least 60 total) in an effort to keep them from shutting down, and to make some money from those students on the side. The districts claim that the lack of enrollment is due to Maine’s “aging and declining population” supposedly due to the lack of jobs (probably because of the combination of state income taxes and labor union dominance), which cause the younger generations to flee the state.

Maine isn’t alone, however. The states of Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia and Washington have been recruiting students from overseas as well, most of them from China, but a few are from Vietnam, Korea, Russia, and France as well, whose parents pay the schools several thousand dollars combined for tuition fees and staying with a host family for a period of one year.

The schools claim that the program isn’t just for revenue and to keep the school enrollment numbers from falling, but to benefit American students by “exposing them to other cultures”.

Yes, let’s expose our kids to the wondrous cultures of Communist and Socialist societies. I’m sure they will have much to learn from them.

But the real cruel joke here could be on the Chinese kids.

It’s a well known fact that the United States consistently ranks near the bottom of the list in international test scores, especially by our students attending government schools, while the Chinese rank at the top. Just a few months ago, the Chinese were celebrating their number one status in test scores.

So now Chinese parents are sending their kids to American government schools? Does this make sense to anyone reading this? Yes, there are those claiming that they want to attend our universities, such as Columbia University or MIT, but couldn’t they obtain the knowledge they need in the high schools in China, then attend our universities?

It almost makes one wonder what the real purpose behind this is on China’s part. Could it be that the Chinese government is trying to “get a feel” for America’s poor education practices in an effort to use it to their advantage at the expense of the naïve parents and their children? After all, the most efficient way to destroy your enemy (and make no mistake, China is our enemy) is to learn as much as you can about them, then use that knowledge to exploit their weaknesses.

Another theory could be that the American schools are using the students to boost their overall grade point average, since most of the overseas kids are typically “A” students, while most American students are… let’s face it…“below average”.

Ah, the conspiracy theories we could come up with! They’re far-fetched, sure… but I know they’ve crossed some of our minds.

I can only come up with one real conclusion for the entire article by Clarke Canfield; that our government education system is so crappy that we actually have to beg foreign students to attend our schools just to keep them from shutting down. It looks to me that more and more parents are “seeing the light” and pulling their kids out of these worthless government institutions, and either enrolling them in private schools or even better, home schooling them… the way it should be.

By now, it’s probably evident to you that I’m not a fan of government education. The more I learned about the origins of it, the more disgusted I became with it, so when I look at what some of these schools are doing just to stay open like the example above, it rubs me the wrong way.

I just hope that the numbers of parents that are catching on to the flaws of government education are growing as well.

Congratulations to the Westboro Baptist Church… For Now

I would like to extend my congratulations to the members of the Westboro Baptist Church, especially founder Fred Phelps and his daughter, the self proclaimed “mouth of God” herself. They have achieved a truly unique feat, something that no other group or organization has ever done in American history.

No, I’m not talking about the recent Supreme Court ruling.

It’s because they have successfully managed to tick off every single demographic in the United States.

From gays to straights, from Christians to atheists, from black to white, male and female, liberals and conservatives, military to civilian, young and old, even from model citizens to gang bangers, everyone hates these guys.

Now, as far as the recent 8-1 decision by the Supreme Court that upheld the rights of this “church” to free-speech, yes, I suppose congratulations are in order here too. As much as I despise this group, I have to grudgingly agree with the majority (Sam Alito was the lone dissenting vote). Of course, it doesn’t help much when Margie “mouth of God” Phelps makes statements like the following:

“The rule of law that applies here is that you don’t get to use your objective standards to call my religion ‘intentional inflection of emotional distress’. Otherwise, y’all would have to shut up, so get off that! The court said, get off of it.”

"Let me tell you what this church does: Shut up all that talk about infliction of emotional distress," she continued.

“When you're standing there with your young child's body bits and pieces in a coffin, you've been dealt some emotional distress by the Lord your God”.

To make it short and simple, the rights of free speech apply to all, no matter how much you disagree with what that group says, or what it represents. If we were to start making exceptions for one group, then who is the next group?

Think about this for a moment. How many times have you heard one side accusing the other of some form of “hate speech”, especially in these last couple of years? What is “hate speech” exactly? How does one define it?

Some would say that “hate speech” is meant to target a particular demographic for the specific purpose of inciting hatred for that demographic (or even a single person representing it), in an effort to ridicule that demographics’ race, gender, religion, political views, etc. with the goal being to make that demographic less credible in the public eye.

But just what is it? Let’s look at a couple of examples of what was considered “hate speech” in the past…

Former governor and Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was accused of “hate speech” when she uttered the phrase “don’t retreat, reload” against her opponents to her supporters last year.

Back in 2008, Dallas County Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, was angrily accused of “hate speech” by black colleagues when he referred to city’s central collections as a “black hole”, because paperwork was routinely lost, never to be found again.

In 1999, a Washington DC Public Advocate named David Howard, a white male, was accused of “hate speech” and forced to resign from his position by outraged black colleagues for using the word “niggardly” during a staff meeting, an ancient, seldom-used term for “miserly”.

Opponents of President Barack Obama are frequently criticized for “hate speech”, with groups citing that these critics disagree with him on most issues simply because he is black.

So there are a few examples of what has been referred to as “hate speech”… but are they really? Where exactly do we draw the line? What would have happened if the Westboro Baptist Church had lost their case? What are the unforeseen consequences, and most importantly, how would certain groups have taken advantage of, and abuse the ruling had the Supreme Court ruled the other way? What other groups do we target?

But enough of playing “Devil’s Advocate”; I’m going to exercise some free speech of my own.

While I disagree with Justice Sam Alito, I sympathize with his viewpoints. Personally, if I heard that this so-called “church” was, say… “accidently-on-purpose” burned to the ground; I wouldn’t exactly feel any sympathy for them. Hell, I’d probably celebrate it.

Was what I just said “hate speech”? Did I cause the church any “emotional distress”?

Well, you could say that, but hey, to paraphrase Margie Phelps’ quote from above, you don’t get to use your religious standards to call my viewpoints “intentional inflection of emotional distress”. Freedom of speech works both ways. What are they going to do… sue me? Their own court ruling victory assures my right to say it.

And now, a personal message to the church, especially to Margie Phelps.

I know you’re emboldened by your victory, and that you’re planning more protests. I know that right now, you feel that you’re “protected” by the law of free speech, and feel “untouchable”. You can’t wait to rub our faces in it during the next protest.

Let me educate you a bit about laws.

One of the greatest illusions in America, possibly the world, is that laws “protect people”.

They don’t.

Laws, at best, are designed to punish those who have wronged you and at worst, control your behavior. They are reactive, not proactive. They do not protect you from anything, or anyone.

If that were true, then restraining orders would actually work. Banks and other “gun-free” zones would never be robbed at gunpoint. Murders, burglaries, child abuse, rapes, etc, all of which are illegal under the law, would never happen; neither would revolutions. There is no such thing as “protection under the law”; it doesn’t exist.

Laws punish after the fact… they do not prevent.

One day, and one day soon, you are going to push someone too far. One day, you will be rushing a member of your congregation to the emergency room to have one of your “God Loves Dead Soldiers” signs surgically removed from his head, courtesy of a bereaved funeral attendee, and unlike any of you, that person will be willing to face the consequences of his actions.

That day is coming… I don’t need to be a prophet of the Lord to see it.

And nothing… no court ruling, no law, not even God Himself, is going to protect you.

Don’t like what I said? The Supreme Court says I can say it, so “shut up” and “get off of it”… you jerks.

Wisconsin Protests Far From Over

Despite Increased Pressure by Union Supporters, Gov. Walker Still Not Budging

Until a few days ago, I’ve never even heard of Governor Scott Walker. I’m sure many of you had never heard of him either.

Well, we all know who he is now.

As of this writing, it has been six days now since the protests by the labor unions began over Gov. Walker’s bill, which is certain to pass. The bill is designed to end their collective bargaining rights, make the unions pay half the costs of their pensions and at least 12.6 percent of their health care coverage. According to one report, this will save the state $30 million by June 30th and another $300 million in the next two years.

Additionally, the unions would no longer be able to force non-members to pay dues, and they would also need to hold annual votes in order to stay organized.

It’s either that, Gov. Walker claims, or the union members will find themselves on the chopping block in an effort to save money. He has also threatened to call in the National Guard to temporarily run the state’s operations (not to suppress the demonstrators, as some have claimed) if the protests continue.

Well, the crowds are getting bigger, and the chants are getting louder. Unions from all across America have joined their comrades in Madison. Members of the Chicago Communist organization, claiming that they sense a “revolution” comparable to those going on in the Middle East, have shown up to help combat what they call an “oppressive regime”.

Ironic, considering that a truly “oppressive regime” would never allow them to even speak on camera, let alone hand out their pamphlets. Just ask the Chinese and the North Koreans.

Oh, wait… you can’t.

Even Rev. Jesse Jackson, one of the big guns of the Liberal movement, has attended to lend his support. Master race-baiter Al Sharpton is sure to follow.

At least 40 percent of Madison’s school districts 2,600 union teachers have called in “sick” so that they may participate in the protests, and have even gone so far as to bring many of their students with them. Due to the absences, school district officials have had to cancel many classes.

But don’t worry about those teachers losing their jobs for lying though… there are plenty of doctors on hand at the rally who have set up special stations so that they can write “sick notes” for the protesting teachers.

The attendees aren’t all union supporters, however.

Conservative supporters of Gov. Walker, notably the Tea Party Patriots and Americans for Prosperity, who had to wait until the weekend so that they wouldn’t have to lie to their bosses and ditch work, have begun arriving as well to show their support for the bill. While still outnumbered by the union attendees, they are a growing presence, especially with the attendance of conservative talk show host Herman Cain. While there aren’t as many counter-protesters as conservatives would like over there (they have to work, after all), Gov. Walker has received of thousands of emails from them urging him to “hang tough” and to not back down.

Yes, many people are showing up in Madison. The only people who have actually left are the Democratic lawmakers that disappeared last Thursday to avoid voting on the bill, which they are certain to lose. Some of them have recently either returned to show their support, or remain in hiding while sending emails and “tweets” to the demonstrators. Union supporters and fellow Democrats have praised their actions, claiming that they have been “buoyed” by the Democrats delaying tactics.

"I am glad to see some Democrats, for a change, with a backbone. I'm really proud to hear that they did that,” said Democratic Sen. Judy Eason-McIntyre of Oklahoma.

Having a backbone used to mean you stayed to fight, even when the odds were against you... kind of like the 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. Now according to the Democrats, having a backbone means running for the hills.

Times sure have changed.

The fight is far from over. The SEIU (Service Employees International Union), the purple-shirted goons who act as enforcers, even to the point of beating a man (Kenneth Gladney) for handing out miniature Gadsden flags outside a town hall meeting, have received their marching orders. They have a number of rallies scheduled over the next few days, including an all-day one in Wisconsin on the 21st of February.

I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

It's OK to be Partisan

Why Unity Isn’t Always Good, and Adversity Isn’t Always Bad

President Obama gave his big State of the Union (or as some have called it, the “Date of the Union”) speech last Tuesday. Predictably, the Democrats gave it thumbs up; the Republicans gave it thumbs down... nothing unusual there.

Now, I could dive into the usual analysis of platitudes, half-truths and laughable lies (“If I get a bill that has earmarks in it, I will veto it”) that were spoken last night, but that would take me at least a dozen pages and to be honest with you, these websites I write for don’t pay me nearly enough for my time and effort.

So instead, I’m going to focus on one single topic of his entire speech… the call for “unity”. Let’s start with the seating arrangements of the attendees last night.

Traditionally, the Democrats sit on the left side of the room facing the podium, while the Republicans sit on the right. This time, it was arranged so that both sides would sit mingled together, side by side with their rivals in a show of “unity”.

To be honest, it turns my stomach.

This is the political equivalent of forcing two kids to hold hands in the principal’s office while he lectures them on why they shouldn’t fight on the playground. You just can’t simply force people to like each other.

Besides, we elected those Republicans into office last year specifically to pick fights with the Dems and stop their policies, not hold their hands and play nice. The next time I see them seated together, I want to see some elbows thrown.

This “show of unity” had no other purpose than to make the Republicans more self-conscious of the Dems seated around them, thus stifling their reactions.

As I said before in a previous article, this is a trap… don’t fall for it.

Which brings me to Obama’s quote during the address: “We move forward together, or not at all”.

But unity is rarely the fastest way to achievement. A unified force can only move as quickly as its slowest member.

Real progression and change comes from adversity. At least, that’s what the Democrats would call it. We conservatives prefer to call it “competition”.

Just as rival businesses competing with each other improves innovation; the same is true with politics. The idea is that each side tries to find ways to out-do the other side in terms of ideas and policies to improve the overall lives of our citizens. In other words, they compete for votes.

A united Congress is a stagnant Congress. When there is no conflict of ideas, when everyone marches in lock-step with one another, all of us are forced to march in the same direction, whether we like that direction or not. You need only to look at countries such as North Korea and China to understand my point. They’re unified under one ideology, but are they all happy?

When the Democrats passed the atrocity known as the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (isn’t it interesting how these bills have such grand, benevolent names, yet they’re often the complete opposite of what they’re titles insinuate?), commonly known as “Obamacare” last December despite the majority of Americans being against it, it fell to the Republicans to repeal the bill.

Repeal is all well and good, but they need to come up with a better plan to offer us, not “unify” with the Democrats to “fix” what was passed. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what competition is. When your adversaries come up with a product for the voters, you have to retaliate with a better product to win more voters over to your side. That’s just how it works.

On the economic side, just take a look at all the products and services we have available from the phone companies in these recent years. Do you think we would have even half of these if we still had only one phone company? Not a chance. No competition… no incentive to improve your products and services. We’d probably still be using rotary dials.

The same rules apply in politics; if there is no competition among those in the Congress, … then there are no incentives to come up with newer and better ideas to improve our lives. That, or just be happy with whatever the “unified” Congress sees fit to hand out to you.

Remember this the next time the President preaches about “unity”. I’d rather live in a divided country with diverse ideas and ways of life, then a country unified under an ideology that I disagree with.

It’s OK to be partisan… it’s OK to stand up for your beliefs. Don’t feel pressured to compromise your beliefs simply to make a certain demographic happy, because I guarantee you, not only are you never going to make everyone happy, you’re not going to be happy either.

Remembering Royal Marshall

Producer of the Neal Boortz Show Dies at Age 43

I learned just this morning that a long time associate producer and friend of the “Neal Boortz Show”, Raymond Royal Marshall (best known simply as “Royal”) has passed away at the age of 43.

What was especially shocking to me was the cause of death… a heart attack. One source claims that the cause was from hyperintensive cardiovascular disease. From the years I’ve listened to the show at work, Royal was an especially vibrant man whose energy was clearly evident by his voice alone. A heart attack was the last thing I would have expected to happen to him.

Royal had worked with host Neal Boortz for just over 17 years. He and his friend, executive producer Belinda Skelton (who has worked on the show for at least 15 years) are arguably almost as well-known as “the talk master” himself, thanks partially to the fact that Neal, unlike many fellow talk show hosts, actually allows his producers to talk to him live on the air with their own microphones.

Neal has often referred to his staff (including Cristina Gonzalez, aka “the Winsome Web Wench”, who has been with the show for 4 years) as his family. Even if he had never made that claim, judging from the banter between them… from the debates to the jokes they played on each other, it was clearly evident they treated each other as such.

However, Royal was the standout of the family. Whether he was debating with Neal on the issues, or collaborating with him on jokes, Royal always did it with a smile. I’ve never heard him lose his cool. Some could even claim that he served as a foil to Neal’s (often justified) anger, and served as a calming, somewhat saner influence to an otherwise crazy show. Neal himself recently attested to Royal’s “endless, endless humor”.

Hands down, one of the most famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view) of Neal and Royal’s collaborations was the hilarious “Boo Got Shot” segment. A shooting had occurred near an apartment complex in Atlanta, Georgia some years back. A black female witness named “Peaches” described the shooting, but her account was so difficult for the average listener to understand, Neal and Royal decided to translate for their audience. The interview can easily be found on YouTube, since there are several versions, but my favorite version is the one with the computer animation provided by Shaun Chapman.  Royal’s interpretation of the witnesses’ statements is an all time classic. I only recently found out about this segment, but now that I’ve found it, I keep going back to listen to it.

Royal was a man of many talents, and he has not only worked for the Neal Boortz show, but for Clark Howard’s show as well. He has also hosted his own show, “The Royal Treatment” and has even performed as a stand-up comedian.

Royal will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity and good humor by his immediate family, as well as his extended family at Cox Radio. He leaves behind his wife Annette and two young daughters, Ava and Amira, ages 2 and 4.

Farewell, Royal Marshall… the Neal Boortz Show is not going to be the same without you. Though I’ve never actually met you, I feel as if I’ve known you.

“My heart is just completely broken; I loved him like a brother.”… Neal Boortz, host of the “Neal Boortz Show”

"For 15 years it's been 'Royal and Belinda’. My other half is gone.  I don't know if I can sit and look at someone else on the other side of that glass."… Belinda Skelton, executive producer

Conservatives Blamed for Act of Senseless Violence … Again

I mastered a new word in the English language today… it’s called “vitriol”.

It wasn’t that hard to learn, to tell you the truth. It’s really easy to absorb a new word when you hear it over and over and over again for three days straight.

So what does the word “vitriol” mean? According to the handy dictionary, in this particular case it means “subject to bitter verbal abuse”. In this case, the “subjects” are the poor American masses that are being force-fed a non-stop diet of hate speech against our elected officials and fellow citizens by the likes of those evil right-wing talk radio shows and Fox News. Let me provide you a few examples of “vitriol” as provided by a well-known politician...

“They bring a knife…we bring a gun”

“Get in their faces!”

“I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”

“Hit back twice as hard.”

“We talk to these folks… so I know whose (censored) to kick.”

“Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat.”

“It’s time to fight for it.”

“Punish your enemies.”

“I’m itching for a fight.”

"They (working class voters) get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

“They (Republicans) can ride with us, but they have to sit in the back.”

“At some point, you’ve made enough money.”

"I've been a little amused in the last couple of days where people have been having these (Tea Party) rallies about taxes.  You would think they would be saying 'thank you'!"

Oh, by the way… all of these vitriolic statements came from your president and mine, Barack Hussein Obama.

And yet, no one in the media seems to remember these comments, as evidenced by the CNN interview with conservative talk show host Neal Boortz when he pointed those very facts out to the interviewer yesterday.

The left sure didn’t have any problems placing the tragic shooting of Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords and several others, including an innocent 9-year old girl (who was one of the children born on the day of September 11th, 2001 and featured in the book “Faces of Hope”) on the Tea Party movement, or conservatives in general, though. It didn’t even take a half-hour after the bullets stopped flying before the accusations against conservative talk radio programs and Fox News began.

So far, the most infamous comments have come from Arizona Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik of Pima County, AZ, who stated that:

“I think that when the rhetoric about hatred, about mistrust about government, about paranoia about how government operates, and to try to inflame the public on a daily basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week has impact, especially on people, especially who are unbalanced personalities to begin with.”

There’s a problem with that statement, however.

I’ve read several articles about the shooter, Jared Loughner. There was a lot said about him; how his college teachers and fellow students were frightened of his erratic behavior, his rambling theories about the government “using grammar to control the populace”, his drug use, his rejection by the army recruiters, and his conspiracy theories, particularly that 9-11 was an “inside job”. His favorite books included “Animal Farm”, “The Communist Manifesto” and “Mein Kampf” (the last two I’d hardly consider conservative favorites). There was even mention of a strange shrine in his backyard with a skull lined with candles, a sign he was into the occult. It also appears that he’s had a beef against Rep. Giffords that went back to 2007, long before the Tea Party movement and Sarah Palin’s rise to fame.

But what is especially interesting is what the articles didn’t say; not one mention of Loughner ever listening to right-wing talk radio, watching Fox News or even talking about them… ever.

So… how could he be influenced by conservative media sources that he hasn’t even been confirmed as listening to?

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the mainstream media has jumped the gun in its conclusions. History is filled with examples:

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the right-wing was accused of doing it. Turns out that the assassin (conspiracy theories aside), Lee Harvey Oswald, was a dedicated left-wing Marxist that at one point in his life, even went as far as “defecting” to the Soviet Union before he wimped out and came crawling back to the U.S.

When John Kennedy’s brother, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated on June 5th, 1968, again, right-wingers were blamed. As it turned out, the assassin, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, was an anti-Semite who blamed Kennedy for his pro-Israel stance.

Remember Joseph Stack, the pilot that flew his plane into an IRS building last year? He tried to destroy a government building; therefore, he simply had to be a conservative, the media theorized. After all, conservatives hate the government, right?

Wrong again. Joseph Stack hated capitalism, “greedy corporations”, the wealthy, and he really hated George W. Bush. He was particularly angry that he wasn’t getting the financial help he thought he deserved from the government, as indicated in his manifesto.

And of course, who can forget the infamous “Times Square Bomber”… remember that guy?

New York Mayor Michael Bloomburg was certain that the bomber was a Tea Partier angry about the recent passage of the “Obamacare” Bill. He wasn’t alone, as “The Nation’s” Robert Dreyfuss also theorized that the bomber was “either a lone nut job or a member of some squirrely branch of the Tea Party, anti-government far right”.

Whoops, not so fast! As we now know, the bomber, a Pakistan-born Muslim-American named Faisal Shahzad, was attempting to flee to Dubai when he was caught.

Well, so much for that theory.

I wondered what the reaction was to President Ronald Reagan’s attempted assassination by John Hinkley Jr. back in 1984; what was the conservative reaction to this? Did they blame it on a “left-wing loon” before they learned that Hinkley was just a mentally unstable, pathetic loser that was trying to impress Jodie Foster (who ironically, is a lesbian and wouldn’t have been interested in him anyway).

That answer is hard to find. No mentions of the right blaming the left so far in that instance. The closest I could get was an article by Brian Bolduc (When Reagan was Shot). It seems that the main focus back then was on gun control, which is typically championed by, you guessed it… liberals.

Even when the target of an assassination was one of the best known conservative icons of our time, the liberals still managed to find a way to blame conservatives.

So there you have it, folks. Now we know that the shooter wasn’t a right-winger. In fairness, he wasn’t really even a left-winger as some would claim. He didn’t have any wings at all; he was a nut job, pure and simple.

If there’s any justice at all, this guy will get the death penalty for the horrible crimes he committed. Hopefully, he’ll never harm anyone ever again.

Then again, liberals are against the death penalty… they’ll probably blame conservatives for killing him too.

Liberals Outraged by the Reading of the Constitution Aloud in Congress

Accuse the GOP of “Wasting Time and Tax Dollars”

For two and a half hours yesterday, members of Congress, Republican and Democrat alike, read the entire U.S. Constitution (with a couple of hiccups, some sections were accidently skipped due to pages in the binder being stuck together) aloud on the House floor. The action was spearheaded by the GOP, much to the irritation of liberal Democrats in both the political arena and at home.

Liberals wasted little time in ridiculing the reading, even going as far as attacking the Tea Party… again.

“It’s an air-kiss they’re blowing to the Tea Party!” Barney Frank spitted and sputtered.

“They’re treating it like a sacred document!” raged New York congressman Gerald Nadler.

Journalist Dahlia Lithwick described the Tea Party movement’s fondness (or as liberals would put it, “obsession”) of the Constitution as a “fetish” in her column.

Then again, she’s a Canadian, so in my view, her opinion on this matter doesn’t count for beans.

Some liberals have even moaned about how much time and money was wasted by taking the two and a half hours to read the document. Trust me folks, Congress has wasted a lot more time, and a hell of a lot more money, on worse projects than this.

However, the worst complaints came from those liberals who demanded to know why the Constitution was not read in its “original” format, before the amendments were added. In particular, they point out to this section of Clause 3: “Apportionment of Representatives and Taxes”:

“Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.”

“Why wouldn’t those Republicans read the part about African American slaves being counted as only ‘three fifths’ of a person” they scream? “We all know that it was written by rich, white slave owning males!”

If I didn’t know better (and I think I do), I would swear that they are actually trying to vilify the Constitution by pointing out the flaws of the past. What these folks conveniently leave out is that the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, passed after the so-called Civil War ended, abolished slavery and the “three fifths rule”, so that particular part of the clause no longer applies… so why read it? When you read a document, you’re supposed to read the most updated version, not the earlier ones.

I should also point out that the “three fifths rule” was originally a compromise to begin with, in order to satisfy the slave states, which wanted their slaves to count as “complete people” for their census, and the free states, which didn’t want them counted at all. It was either that, or the slave states would refuse to participate in the convention, let alone ratify the Constitution.

Apparently, not all of the founding fathers were slave owners, and they, most notably Benjamin Franklin, fought fiercely to make slavery unconstitutional, but the compromise was the best they could manage at the time.

But despite all this, my favorite comment by the liberals was actually uttered by a lawyer that was in a debate with Sean Hannity yesterday on his radio program (though her name escapes me). She actually claimed that the reading of the Constitution was not only a waste of time and money, but completely unnecessary, since all politicians are already “generally familiar” with the Constitution when they are sworn into office.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the problem… that our politicians and mainstream America only have a “general understanding”. You only need to look at some of the most common misconceptions that people have of some of the articles and amendments, notably the 1st Amendment, or the right to free speech, which doesn’t actually allow you to say what you want about anyone, wherever you want… it was designed to protect those who criticize the government from acts of retaliation by the government.

Another is the freedom of religion, which is commonly misinterpreted as “separation of church and state”, which is actually nowhere on the document. It means that the government cannot establish or enforce any particular religion; it does not mean that we must bend over backwards to accommodate everyone’s religious beliefs, as the “Ground Zero Mosque” supporters seem to think.

Of course, we also have the good old “right to vote” (“the right to vote shall not be infringed”) part as well. Contrary to popular belief, there is no right to vote in a federal/presidential election. You cannot be denied the right to vote because of your race, gender, religion etc., but there is no specific right to vote.

As the old saying goes, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

No, the reading of the Constitution will not magically make everything all better. It was for the most part a symbolic gesture by the GOP that they “get it” this time, and that they are listening to the American people (though whether they actually do or not, we’ll see in time). It is a reminder to all, Republican and Democrat alike, what ideals they are supposed to be standing for.

The Constitution, while imperfect (I’ve ranted about the 16th Amendment extensively already), is a shining example of its kind in the world. To the best of my knowledge, no other country has anything like it; many cannot even add amendments to theirs. It is the basis of all of our freedoms, privileges and rights.

And that, Congressman Gerald Nadler, does make it a sacred document.

Is America Surrendering again for “The Greater Good”?

Just a few short weeks ago, Americans were in an uproar over the new TSA procedures, which included high-tech scan machines and intrusive pat-downs of elderly passengers and the occasional young child… passengers who wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow of airport security personal in most airports overseas.

But as time passed, it would appear that travel-weary Americans have given up and surrendered their rights of reasonable privacy to the government, at least in the terminals.

Now they simply sigh and shrug as the TSA goes about its business of feeling them up and seizing mundane items like bottled water and souvenir snow globes (one bright spot… it seems they now allow fingernail clippers and sewing scissors again), some items which are even sold in that very terminal.

Despite the initial outcry for the TSA to concentrate on the far more efficient method of profiling suspicious passengers instead of merely looking for objects, they have steadfastly refused to change their methods (they have added a few “behavior detection officers”, though with profiling still forbidden, I wonder how effective these officers really are), counting on Americans to at some point simply give up the fight.

It worked.

If there is one fatal flaw that we Americans have, it’s that while we usually have a strong initial push to bring about changes, we have little stamina for the long run. We “adapt” too quickly and easily into deluding ourselves that “that’s just the way it is now, why fight it? I just want to get done what I need done.”

Case in point, let’s look at a few quotes from some recent passengers…

“If it means me getting naked, I’ll get naked and get right on the plane.”… Gil Torres.

“I’m willing to give up a lot as long as I can fly safely.”… Erika Holland

"A lot of people who come through (the image machines), their standard response is, 'That's it? That's what all the fuss is about?'"… Chris Soulia, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1234

The new attitude is this; “I’ll do whatever they ask me to do, just as long as I get on my flight on time”.

Americans are once again giving up for the sake of moving on with their lives.

We gave up when the travesty known as the “income tax” was ratified as the 16th Amendment of our Constitution on February 3rd, 1913; an amendment that was never intended by our forefathers.

We gave up when the government introduced the “withholding” act, which allowed them to seize a portion of your income before you even received your check.

We gave up when Social Security was introduced, which allowed the government to seize even more of our income for the express purpose of redistributing it to the elderly, rather than allowing us to keep that money to fund our own retirement accounts.

All of this was done “for the greater good”.

So I’m wondering… how long will it be until we give up the fight against “Obama Care?”

What will happen the next time a massive push for amnesty for illegal aliens is introduced, or to protect our borders from being invaded by “honest folks who just want a better life?”

What about the fight against the “victory mosque” currently being developed close to the former World Trade Center? I’ve seen no news about it recently. Have we given up on that already?

Will we have the strength, stamina and commitment to continue the fight, or will we simply accept these as “just the way it is now” because they’re for “the greater good”?

We’ll see.

Obama Refers to Republicans as “Hostage Takers”

Democrats Balk at Bush Tax Cuts Compromise

For weeks after the November elections that swept the Republicans into power in the House and the majority of positions throughout the United States, President Obama and his supporters have gone from the “enemy” having to “ride in the back seat” to suddenly stressing the need to “compromise” with them on major legislation.

Ask, and you shall receive.

President Obama now has to deal with his first real compromise with the GOP… allowing the Bush 2003 tax cuts to be extended for another 2 years, which would include the wealthiest Americans as well as the middle class.  In return, the GOP would allow another 13 months of unemployment benefits, which will cost into the billions of dollars; money that we don’t actually have.

I guess it’s time to give China a ring again.

In typical Obama fashion, the president has once again directly attacked the GOP, stating:

"It's tempting not to negotiate with hostage takers unless the hostage gets harmed.   In this case, the hostage was the American people."

He also described the so-called “tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans” as the Republicans’ “holy grail”, and that it would be too difficult for him to move forward unless the GOP got what they wanted.

I guess that means the Republicans are terrorists now. Then again, accusations like that from the liberals is nothing new.

So here’s what we have in a nutshell… President Obama says “we won, no deals” after the 2008 election, then he turns around and says “let’s make a deal” after he gets his butt kicked in November, so the Republicans actually make a deal and he and his allies scream “you’re all terrorists!”

I couldn’t help but notice the anger, arrogance and contempt he expressed in his press conference, even towards his fellow liberals, some who even accused him of being a “patsy” for “caving in” to the GOP.  It was a performance worthy of a dictator from a third-world, banana republic.

How to explain his attitude? Was this because he didn’t get what he wanted, or could it partially be that maybe he’s realizing for the first time just what kind of fickle allies helped put him into office in the first place?

At any rate, we still have a ways to go on this compromise. There’s no actual bill yet, nor any legislation. Many Democrats and a few Republicans, each thinking they could have gotten a better deal, have vowed to vote against the proposal.

They had better make up their minds soon, because when those Bush tax cuts expire this January, and they go back up to pre-2003 levels, everybody loses.

Proposed NYC Mosque Site is not “Hallowed Ground”

At Least, Not According to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Imam who is spearheading the effort to build a proposed “Islamic Cultural Center” a mere two blocks from Ground Zero, has been hanging around Vice President Joe Biden for too long; he seems to have caught his “food in mouth” disease.

In his latest statement during a speech to the Council of Foreign Relations, Imam Rauf stated that it’s “absolutely disingenuous” to suggest that the site is located on “hallowed ground”.

Now, technically, he’s correct… like I mentioned earlier, the proposed site is two blocks from the Ground Zero itself, but given it’s close proximity to the site, and the fact that his cultural center is being renovated from the Burlington Coat Factory, which itself was damaged by the landing gear of one the planes, most people still consider it as part of the site itself.

But here’s the real kicker to this statement.

To back up his claims, Imam Rauf pointed out the location has a “strip joint” and “betting parlors” nearby. Therefore, the site couldn’t possibly be “hallowed ground”.

Ok, I may be going out on a limb here, I could be totally out of line, but correct me if I’m wrong…

Aren’t Muslims against things like strip joints? Aren’t Muslims against gambling establishments? Aren’t they against alcohol, which both places would doubtless be serving by the truckload?

If so, wouldn’t it be contradictory to their beliefs to build a mosque so close to such facilities? I just don’t see devout Muslims stuffing wads of cash in g-strings after prayer services, and then heading out to lose more cash betting on the ponies. It just doesn’t click.

So this brings back the question… what is the real reason why they are so insistent on building the mosque right in that spot, even to the point where they refused to even meet Governor David Paterson to discuss possible relocation options, if the proposed center is so close to facilities that offend them so much?

Imam Rauf gave his answer on why it has to be there during a CNN interview with Soledad O’Brian…

“If we move from that location, the story will be the radicals have taken over discourse” he said. “The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack. And I’m less concerned about the radicals in America than I’m concerned about the radicals in the Muslim world.”

American radicals? Which American radicals? I’ve yet to hear of any anti-mosque protesters threatening to kill anyone or blow something up if the mosque isn’t moved. I haven’t heard any “death to Muslims” chants. Is he suggesting that Muslims will attack us again out of anger if it’s moved?

On a side note, will building the mosque at the proposed site make the Islamic radicals like us any more?

I find it almost amusing that Imam Rauf actually makes his threat under the guise that he’s only looking out for our safety, when it was his bright idea to build the damn thing so close to Ground Zero to begin with.

Kind of like presenting someone a ticking time bomb wrapped in a beautiful, silk cloth.

Let’s say that one of those evil, bigoted anti-mosque protestors… like me… said on national television, “You know, if they refuse to re-locate this mosque, it will inflame the anger of Christians all across America. Sooner or later, one of them is going to try to burn it down, or blow it up. Muslims will be the target of their wrath everywhere. For the safety of all Muslims, they need to cancel their plans to build it.”

Now, be honest… what do you think the Muslims, mosque supporters, the mainstream media, Hillary Clinton and President Obama would say about me?   Go ahead, say it… I know it’s at the tip of your tongue.

In the same interview, Imam Rauf claims that if he had known all this controversy would happen, he would never have proposed building it there. Yet, he still refuses to consider re-locating it.

Sure, Imam… we believe you. Really we do.

Keep talking, Imam Rauf… the more you do, the more you make our case for us.

Are Gamblers Being Denied Their Right to Gamble?

Battle Lines Drawn Over Proposed Casino Near Historic Gettysburg

Call it the “Battle of Gettysburg, Part II”

I’ll give you the quick and dirty version of what’s going on here; if you want more details, I’ve provided a link to the full report by the Associated Press at the bottom of this article.

A large casino is being proposed to be built about a mile away from the historic site of the Battle of Gettysburg, in which over 160,000 Union and Confederate soldiers fought a bloody, 3-day battle (July 1-3, 1863) which turned the tide of the so-called “Civil War”, but also resulted in the deaths of approximately 3,000 soldiers from both sides of the conflict, with an additional 51,000 casualties.

Supporters of the casino, many of which include preservationists, claim that the casino will bring much needed jobs and money to stimulate the economy. They also claim that the casino will be nowhere near the 6,000 acre park, so it should not affect the park’s resources.

“You've got to really keep it in its proper context,” casino spokesman David La Torre said. “You've got to realize how big this place is. It's humongous (the park), and people are fighting us and we're not even located on it."

Opponents argue that building the casino, which will include 600 slot machines and 50 table games, will “sully the character” of the battlefield, and disrespects the memories of the soldiers who fought and died on the battlefield, as well as the ancestors of those soldiers.

Does this scenario sound familiar? It should… it almost mirrors the controversy going on right now in New York City regarding the mega-mosque being built on the site of the former Burlington Coat Factory, a mere 2 blocks from the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The biggest gripes from the mosque supporters is that their opponents are “infringing on the Muslims’ religious freedoms”, as well as showing “bigotry against Muslims” by opposing the mosque. They also love to point out that it’s “not even near ground zero”.

OK, let’s use that same logic in this scenario.

Since the casino opponents are against it being built near the site of a historic battle where thousands died, than it must automatically mean that they are infringing on gambler’s rights to gamble. It also must mean that the opponents hate all gamblers. And the fact that it’s only a mile from the battlefield? Nah, that doesn’t matter at all… they just hate them because they’re gamblers!

Makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?

Of course it doesn’t, but this is the very logic that the supporters of the ground zero mosque like to use against us.

It’s very easy to convince otherwise well-meaning, kind-hearted people to rally to your cause by claiming that a certain demographic “hates” you and wishes you ill, even if those claims are not necessarily true. For that matter, it is much easier to make accusations than it is for the accused to prove those accusations false, especially when the well-meaning folks that you convert to your cause think more with their hearts and emotions than with their heads.

Oh, and by the way… don’t think that I don’t know that one of you wise guys out there will try to use the above statement against me. You’re not as clever as you think you are, so don’t even try it. You know full well the context in which it was written.

Anyway, the Muslims in this case have proven to be absolute masters of it. They have several factors going for them; they’re minorities, they practice a minority religion in the U.S. that is more or less mysterious to most of us, and they love to dredge up past offenses against them dating back hundreds of years ago, all tactics for gaining sympathy for their cause. Top it off with stirring, emotional speeches against an “evil” majority power (in this case, white Christians) that’s “out to get them”, and you’ll have a following of mindless drones on your side in no time.

Hell, the NAACP does this all the time, so this shouldn’t sound too strange to you.

So, boys and girls, learn from what’s going on in Gettysburg right now. This is a good “teaching moment” for what the opposition to the mega-mosque is really about.

It's About Respect, Stupid

Opposition Against 9/11 Mosque is not an Attack on Religious Freedoms

I’m going to begin by making you some promises.

I promise that I won’t mention any complicated statistics, graphs or charts. Such things are boring, and I need you to be wide awake so that you can scream at me.

I promise that I won’t talk about the controversial past actions of Imam Feisal Abudl Rauf, who is spearheading the movement to erect the mega mosque (or as they call it, the “Islamic cultural center”).

Besides, he’s currently using our tax dollars to tour the Middle East to gather funds for it, so he’s a little busy right now.

I promise that I will not discuss President Barack Obama’s endorsement of the mosque to impress his Muslim audience last Friday… or how he tried to backpedal out of it on Saturday.

Yeah, good luck, Mr. President. I’d like to see you “uhhh, errr, ummm” your way out of that one.

We 9/11 mosque critics have been accused of a lot lately.   First of all, we’ve been accused of being “bigots” because of our opposition.

I guess the word “racist”, meaning one who believes his race is genetically superior to all other races, has lost a lot of its power, so the word “bigot” (one who just plain doesn’t like other races) is now the choice weapon to bludgeon us with.

We have been accused of “lumping all Muslims together with the terrorists”. I won’t say that some haven’t been doing that, but personally, I haven’t, and I challenge anyone to find one example in my previous writings where I’ve done so.

We’ve been accused of sensationalizing the issue by claiming that the proposed mega mosque is right on the site of the attack itself. Personally, I’ve never said that. I said it was in the former Burlington Coat Factory, which was damaged by one of the planes. However, the site is a mere two blocks from the attack, practically right in its shadow. That’s close enough, in my opinion, and I consider it part of the 9/11 site.

Now, here is my favorite accusation against me, and I’m going to quote directly from a fellow AC writer:

“David, it’s not your business to get involved with someone else’s Freedom of Religion”.

Wow… you would think that I was directly responsible for the mosque being opposed!

For the record, I don’t care what religion you are. I’m not religious. Whether you want to kneel at an alter in a cathedral, ring a bell and clap your hands to wake the gods, or face Mecca and bang your forehead on a prayer mat five times a day doesn’t matter to me, so why would I care enough about you to stop you from worshipping freely?

And with that, we get to the real meat of the issue.

The issue isn’t about bigotry, or where the attacks really happened, and it sure as hell isn’t about suppressing a Muslim’s freedom of religion.

You see, in order to do that, we would have to actually not only prevent the Muslims from being able to pray freely and in the open, but haul them off to prison when they’re caught. Name one time that we’ve legally done that. Go ahead, just one.

To paraphrase a quote from a caller to a local radio talk show, claiming that we’re suppressing a Muslim’s religious freedoms by asking him not to build a mosque there, is like saying we’re against the freedom of the press because we don’t want a printing press built there either.

There are those, particularly certain politicians (*cough Obama *cough), who claim that not only do the Muslims have the right to worship where they please, but that they also have a right to build a temple of worship, on private property, in downtown Manhattan.

And you know what? They’re right! They’re absolutely right!

The thing is that no one is disputing this. No one is saying that the Cordoba Initiative doesn’t have the right to build a mosque there. Sure they can!

The question here isn’t if they have the right, we’re asking if it’s the right thing to do.

What the Cordoba Initiative (and the mosque supporters) is failing to understand are the feelings and concerns of the thousands of relatives who lost their loved ones in the attack on 9/11. Of all people, the Muslims should understand how this will appear to them, especially considering their history of planting “victory mosques” in places of conquest.

They preach about “tolerance” and “understanding”; how about showing those traits to the relatives of the victims?

This is not about not allowing the Muslims to build mosques. There are over 100 mosques in New York City alone; one was even featured recently in a CNN video that is a very short distance from the proposed mega mosque, where the worshippers have conducted their services peacefully for over 40 years. Neither this mosque, nor any others in the area, has been the targets of protests. In fact, there are over 2,000 mosques in the United States. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more mosques in the U.S. than there are churches in the Middle East.

So much for the “religious intolerance” argument.

Would you like to see real religious intolerance? Go to Saudi Arabia, declare yourself a Christian or Jew, then tell them that you want to go on a tour of Mecca. See how far they toss you back out. Then they’ll probably scrub their hands raw, since they don’t like to be touched by the “unclean infidels”.

That’s religious intolerance.

Now, for my final point.

Some high ranking politicians in the federal government have been taking sides on this issue. Some oppose the mosque, others are against it. Here’s my message to all of them on both sides, and I’m going to put it very simply so that even these buffoons can understand it:

Butt out.

This is not the business of the federal government. This is a matter between the people of NYC, the families of the victims of 9/11, and the Cordoba Initiative.

As much as I despise the possibility of the mega mosque going up, I’d rather see it built there, than have the federal government step in and tell a private organization that they can’t build it on their own property (or for that matter, force the mosque to be built over the objections of the citizens).

I implore the Cordoba Initiative to either find a more suitable place to build, or perhaps turn their project into a true multi-cultural center, one that welcomes all faiths and beliefs and invites them to talk and learn from each other about what makes them alike, instead of what makes them different, without all of the preaching and the lectures… not an Islamic center dominated by Muslims that simply allows those of other faiths to visit and be ushered to an “alternate faith” prayer room and an obligatory “memorial site”.

Can you imagine the positive publicity Muslims would get if they built such a site?

If Imam Rauf, and his Cordoba Initiative truly mean to reach out to other faiths, if they really want to show sensitivity to the victims of 9/11 victims, they might want to look into that.

Knowing Imam Rauf however, that could be too much to ask.

“Even Illegal Immigrants Pay Taxes”

My Response to CNN’s Rick Sanchez Interview with Rep. Rick Murphy
On July 29th, CNN aired Rick Sanchez’s interview with Republican Rep. Rick Murphy on illegal immigration (to watch the interview, click on either of the “Even Illegal Immigrants Pay Taxes” links at the bottom of the article under “links”).

Mr. Sanchez went on the attack right from the word “go”, demanding Rep. Murphy to tell him what his “beef” was with illegal immigration.”

From there, the interview quickly devolved into ridiculous, rapid fire questions by Sanchez, first by asking him if he “was an elected official”, then “do you think that people who come into this country all steal? Do they all live in caves?”

These questions were clearly not designed for an intelligent response, but rather to throw Rep. Murphy off guard so that Sanchez could smugly make some “triumphant” retort.

Mr. Sanchez even countered Rep. Murphy’s comment that illegal aliens do not pay taxes by giving the tired old argument that all illegals pay taxes, because they all pay sales taxes and property taxes.

When Rep. Murphy suggested that “well, most cities here don’t tax groceries”, Sanchez shot back that he was acting like a “smart guy” and he “didn’t want to hear his talking points”.

For his finale, Mr. Sanchez gave his last “gotcha” statement…

“Did you know that illegal immigrants subsidize you and your Social Security to the tune of 7 billion dollars so that someday you can retire on money they put into the system that… they can never collect?” He quoted the New York Times as his source.

When Rep Murphy suggested that they (the illegals) were doing this on the backs of those whose identities they had stolen, Sanchez replied that he was wrong, saying…

“Did you know that most illegal aliens are given something by the federal government called a ‘Tax ID’ that allows the government to collect social security taxes from them? Did you know that?”

Well, actually I didn’t know that. But let’s take a look at the interview point by point.

Mr. Sanchez asks if we think “all people who come into this country steal”.

This is what I would call a “reverse broad brush” tactic. Rather than making a broad general statement about a demographic yourself, you imply that your opponent is doing it when they suggest that all members of a demographic are linked to an activity (usually in the negative sense), even if they clearly did not intend it that way. For example, if you said that “illegal immigrants who sneak across the Mexican into the U.S. border are criminals”, I would accuse you of saying that all Mexicans who crossed the border were criminals.

See how it works?

And to answer Mr. Sanchez’s question, no… of course not everyone who comes into this country “steals”. Sure, illegals have been known for stealing at times, some would even suggest as far as saying they steal jobs, but we’re not going to lump legal immigrants and tourists into that category.

Mr. Sanchez’s next question was “do they all live in caves?”

Now, being the smartass I am, I would’ve replied “Gee, I don’t know Rick, do you?” That probably would’ve ended the interview right there, but Rep. Murphy is a much nicer guy than I am.

First, Mr. Sanchez sets up Rep. Murphy to put him in a negative light by suggesting to the viewers that Murphy (along with those of us who are also against illegal immigration) that we consider illegals “less than human” by asking him “if they all live in caves”.

Then he fires off his first “gotcha” statement by claiming that all illegals pay taxes, because they pay sales taxes and property taxes

The problem is that first of all, if the store has a sales tax… everyone who shops there pays them, not just illegals. You can’t avoid a sales tax; it’s simply a part of the product or service that you’ve purchased. For Sanchez to imply that illegals go out of their way to pay American taxes simply because they shop here is absurd.

When we accuse illegal aliens of not paying taxes, we are generally referring to income taxes, which most illegals do NOT pay. Uncle Sam does not take a big chunk out of their paychecks, because they typically don’t receive paychecks, they receive cash under the table. Do you really think someone getting cash under the table is going to go out of his way to tell the government how much he made, especially if he’s in the country illegally? I don’t think so.

And as far as illegal aliens paying property taxes… well, Mr. Sanchez is correct, some of them do.

But this begs the question; why are illegal aliens even allowed to purchase property here to begin with?

Sanchez mentioned that the federal government actually gives Tax ID’s to illegal immigrants, which allows the government to charge social security taxes from them. It should be noted that the Tax ID also enables an illegal to get a loan to purchase property, bypassing the need for a Social Security number.

All this tells me is that this is just one more way our federal government is contributing to the problems of illegal immigration, rather than fixing it. It doesn’t seem so strange for them to be so reluctant to enforce its immigration laws now, does it?

I should thank Mr. Sanchez for providing us with more ammunition to use against them.

But now we get to my favorite part; his claim that they contribute over 7 billion dollars to our social security system so that “we can retire” and that the illegals receive no benefits for themselves.

Seven billion dollars… that’s a lot of money.

So where the hell is it?

The last I heard, our Social Security was close to bankruptcy, if it isn’t already. Some have even claimed that it’s little more than IOU’s. Mr. Sanchez did not specify whether he meant 7 billion a year, or if that was the grand total within a certain timeframe, but either way, what happened to the money?

I’ll tell you what happened… the government likely already spent it on “other projects”. They can do that, you know. Social Security is not a special “lock box” that’s reserved just for you… the Social Security taxes you pay actually goes into the general fund, which is accessible to politicians whenever they feel that they “need it”.

Those Social Security statements that you get every few months… that’s how much you are owed, not how much you have.

Let me put it this way… when I plan my retirement; I’m not even going to factor Social Security into it. I doubt that it’s even going to exist at that point. This is especially true if the Obama administration gets its way and creates a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens, who would then likely qualify for Social Security. You can kiss any money that’s left “bye bye”.

Besides, Sanchez quoting his statement from the New York Times is laughable in itself, as if I’d trust anything that liberal leaning rag printed; almost as laughable as Rick Sanchez’s show itself.

Now go back to your cave.

Illegal Farmers Issue Challenge to Americans: “Take Our Jobs!”

Comedian Stephen Colbert Assists United Farm Workers with Challenge

“Come on, take our jobs!”

The gauntlet has been thrown down by the “undocumented workers” of the United Farm Workers of America organization.

Claiming that they’re sick and tired of being accused by the United States of “taking away jobs from Americans”, the UFWA, with the help of comedian Stephen Colbert, has launched a campaign called “Take Our Jobs!” The campaign, while played mostly for laughs, has serious undertones to it, and is focusing on “recruiting” Americans who are willing to train and work as farm hands and fill in the thousands of agricultural positions that would be left vacant should the illegal aliens have to leave. They are especially interested in politicians and “anti-immigrant activists” (don’t you just love how they phrase it as “anti-immigrant”, when they know damn well that it’s illegal immigration we’re against, not immigration itself?) who are willing to put up with the back-breaking work and unbearable heat in the fields.

Here’s what they’re saying in a nutshell...

“We’re tougher than you are. We’ve been doing this for years. You gringos can’t handle it. You’d be lost without us, so shut up and show us some respect!”

As if they’re sob stories about how tough it is in the fields somehow automatically justifies them illegally sneaking across our borders to begin with.

The website, “Take Our Jobs”, which is part of the official United Farm Workers of America website, has a sign up sheet that asks for your name, email and zip code. Once the information is entered, you just hit “submit”, which comes with this job description under the sign up sheet:

Job may include using hand tools such as knives, hoes, shovels, etc. Duties may include tilling the soil, transplanting, weeding, thinning, picking, cutting, sorting & packing of harvested produce. May set up & operate irrigation equip. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions (Summertime 90+ degree weather) & is physically demanding requiring workers to bend, stoop, lift & carry up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.”

They really, really want you to know just how tough it is out there.

The author of the article from which I got this story, Juliana Barbassa, goes to great lengths to describe what you’ll be up against; triple digit temperatures, heat exhaustion, long days, and below minimum wage pay with no overtime.

“Any takers?” she sneers.

Arturo Rodriguez, who is the president of the United Farm Workers of America, scoffs at the idea that Americans will actually apply for any of the jobs.

"The reality is farmworkers who are here today aren't taking any American jobs away. They work in often unbearable situations," he said. "I don't think there will be many takers, but the offer is being made. Let's see what happens."

Michael Rubio, supervisor of Kern County, shares Mr. Rodriguez’s views.

“Our county, our economy, rely heavily on the work of immigrant and unauthorized workers," he said. "I would encourage all our national leaders to come visit Kern County and to spend one day, or even half a day, in the shoes of these farm workers."

Comedian Stephen Colbert plans to feature this campaign on Comedy Central on July the 8th

Look, as I’ve said before, I’m not against a “guest worker” program, so long as it doesn’t involve a path towards citizenship. I know farm work is a tough job; no one is going to deny that.

But what irks me is the blatant arrogance of the illegal aliens themselves. These people should not be featured (and possibly even getting paid for) on television, or challenging Americans to “do something about them”.

You want to work in America? Do it the right way.   Learn and respect our laws, our culture and our language… which by the way is English. Yes, I know it’s not official, but that’s the language all of our laws are written in, so there you have it.

Fill out the paperwork, attend the classes, and when you graduate, raise your right hand and swear allegiance to the United States, and no other. Then you will be more than welcome here.

Then you won’t have to worry about working the fields while dodging the Policia Americana at the same time.
