Police Accused of Ticketing Latina for “Driving While Hispanic”

Claims She was Cited Because She Couldn’t Speak English

There is a controversy going on in Dallas, Texas over some speeding tickets that were issued over the past three years.

You see, according to the Orlando Sentinel (10/28/09), there is apparently no law stating that you need to know the English language in order to be able to drive there. This is where Ernestina Mondragon, who has accused the police of citing her for “being a non-English speaking driver” comes in.    She was originally pulled over for making an illegal U-turn while driving her daughter to school back on Oct. 2nd

Hector Flores, who was the former president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, exclaimed “It’s unbelievable. It’s (here it comes, guys… everyone’s favorite phrase!) racial profiling. She was cited for driving while Hispanic. For driving while immigrant.”

Ms. Mondragon also stated to the Dallas Morning News that “I felt I’d been looked down on and discriminated against”.

Right… as if making an illegal U-turn, failing to present a license, and being unable to understand the officer had absolutely nothing to do with the case.

But wait, it gets even better folks, this is my favorite part.

Quoting from the Sentinel; “Ms. Mondragon, who has been in the country legally since 1980, speaks mostly Spanish”.

Stop! Back up for a second.

You mean to tell me, with a straight face, that Ernestina Mondragon has been here for for almost thirty years, and she still can’t speak English with any real fluency… and she has the nerve to complain about being cited for “driving while Hispanic”?

Once upon a time, I would’ve said that this was unbelievable, that neither Ms. Mondragon’s or Hector Florez’s complaints could be taken seriously.   Unfortunately, I’ve seen or read about so many incidents like this, that it’s no longer out of the ordinary.

I can only wonder what would happen to Ms. Mondragon if she needed medical attention after a car accident, and she was unable to communicate with the EMTs.

I imagine they’d be sued because they didn’t speak Spanish.

I’d like to remind her, along with her supporters, that while you can speak in any language you wish in this country, the majority of the U.S. speaks English. You’re going to need to learn it if you want any real chance of success here. I can’t help but wonder what job she has now with her limited language skills.

I’m also going to go out on a limb and assume that she uses her daughter as her translator. I’ve seen with my own eyes at least three occasions where Hispanic mothers, unable to speak English, would use their young children to interpret for them, one of them couldn’t have been older than 6 years old. On another occasion, the parents of a 12 year-old girl were using her to translate a complicated financial matter with a bank teller. The poor kid was trying her best, but it’s difficult enough to explain matters that complicated to a native English speaker, let alone having to ask a little kid to try to explain them in Spanish.

You don’t see that happening with natives from other countries. Probably because since none of our services, television or radio stations are in their languages, they have more of an incentive to learn English quicker. Not so with Spanish speakers. Latinos can safely seal themselves off in their own little worlds, and never need to even learn basic English phrases.

Alright, a quick disclaimer is necessary here…

Not all Latinos have trouble learning English, or seal themselves off in their own little worlds. Most of them handle the English language quite well.

There, had to get that out before I get accused of painting all Latinos with a broad brush.

Another thing… don’t try to argue with me about how the first settlers in America (in Florida) spoke Spanish, so therefore, the earliest language spoken here was Spanish. I’ve seen this tactic used several times before. Our laws are written in English. So is our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.

Oh, and don’t even try pointing out that drivers do not have to know English under Dallas law, that’s not what this column is about. The law is stupid, but until the citizens of Dallas do something about it, that’s just the way it is.

While English is unfortunately not the official language by law, it is so in the minds of most Americans, native born and immigrants alike. Individuals like Ms. Mondragon, as well as race-based groups such as the likes of the League of United Latin American Citizens need to stop expecting us to bend over backwards to accommodate them, and start integrating in with the rest of us. There is no longer any excuse for not learning English, or any other language for that matter. Language courses are available in books at the library and all over the internet; many of them are available for free.

Take advantage of them. Not only will you be better off for it, you’ll probably avoid situations like the above in the first place.

Now how much do you want to bet that I’ll be accused of making racist comments?

Bill Cosby Ridicules Tea Party Protesters

Protests are no Laughing Matter

Let me begin by first giving credit where credit is due.

Bill Cosby is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comedians of all time. His wisecracks, facial expressions, and his insistence on keeping the jokes clean have gained him a wide, diverse audience of all ages, colors and both genders. He was always a personal favorite of mine.

This morning, I caught a story on the AP about Cosby finally agreeing to accept the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a reward he had previously rejected because of his disgust at the profanity and “N-words” that were prevalent in a previous ceremony for Richard Prior.

But as the title of this article hints, that’s not what this story is about.

During his interview, Cosby made the unfortunate mistake that most Hollywood celebrities do… he began discussing politics.

Cosby, disturbed by the recent “tea party” protests, commented that for him, “To see people marching down the street, talking about a tea party, they’ve got to be kidding… and the name-calling, these people are hilarious.”

He added that “What’s not funny is how seriously so many of them have come together to speak like this.”

Cosby has also expressed that not only was he was appalled that some public (or as I call them, government) schools refused to air Obama’s speech to the students, but he also agrees with the likes of former President Jimmy Carter that some of the opposition is driven by racism.

Bill… Bill… Bill.

You, a man who started out with nothing and worked hard all of your life, using the talents that you have to become the success that you are today despite all the obstacles that you’ve faced…

You, as a man who was excoriated by members of the black community for daring to suggest that they learn to take responsibility for themselves and their own actions, rather than relying on the government to make special adjustments to make life easier for them…

You, of all people, should know better than to make ridiculous comments like these.

Do you really stand with former President Carter, arguably one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, a man who has never met a tyrannical despot that he didn’t like, in saying that the opposition to Obama is based on racism? Really?

Let me educate you on what the “tea party” protests are really about.

It is not Barack Obama’s skin color that the people are protesting about. Actually, it’s really not about Barack Obama himself, though he has certainly plays a highly visible role in our nation’s problems.

The protests are about the biggest takeover of private businesses by the government in modern history. They are about the skyrocketing national debt that the government has put us in.

And yes, yes, yes… Bush did start us on that debt. He certainly didn’t do us any favors when it came to that. He further opened that door a crack when he signed that so-called “bailout bill”.

But Obama blew the door right off its hinges and sent the stormtroopers in with the pork laden “stimulus” bill.

The protests are also about the government’s attempt to socialize our health care industry, turning into a clone of the troubled systems overseas.

They are about the government raising taxes, particularly against the wealthy, who are responsible for providing the vast majority of the new and current jobs, either by creating businesses themselves, or simply due to their spending habits.   Someone has to make all those expensive toys… like cars, yachts and planes.

They are about the government’s practice of singling out and attacking private citizens who dare question their policies. Want an example? Just ask Joe Wurzelbacher, aka, “Joe the Plumber”. Remember him?

They are upset over the decline of conservative values, which places emphasis on an individual’s ethics of hard work, self-reliability and innovation in order to make their dreams of a better life come true. People with these values have been replaced by those with a more liberal, moocher mentality, who have taken to voting into office whichever politician will promise them the most “free stuff” by using the power and authority of the government, usually at the expense of another individual’s hard-earned money or rights.

Yet, you agree with Carter and other race-mongers that the protesters are marching because they are “racist”.

Trust me, Bill… if Obama looked like McCain, and his policies were exactly the same as they are now, they’d still be marching out there. We don’t give a flying rat’s rear-end what color Obama’s skin is, it’s what he’s doing that counts.

I don’t laugh at your jokes because you’re black, I laugh at them because they’re funny. See how it works?

Racism is the belief that a race (usually your own) is inherently or genetically superior to all other races, and any actions that enforce that belief… like refusing to serve or assist someone simply because you believe that their race is inferior to yours. I have seen no evidence of any racism in the tea parties, including the one I attended in Orlando.  I saw dozens of signs. Not one sign mentioned Obama’s race. Not one. I challenge you, Mr. Cosby, to point out any evidence of real racism at the protests.

Racism does not include a white person who disagrees with someone who happens to be black political views.

If we were really racists who hated Obama, we would actually have to hate half of ourselves as well, since technically, Obama is half white.

How’s that for a joke, Bill?

There is one thing we can agree on though. You’re right, the fact that so many of these people have “come together to speak like this” isn’t funny… far from it. It’s a warning that people are becoming fed up, and if the government doesn’t watch its step, what comes next will be no laughing matter; for you… or anyone.

Cheney Accuses Obama of "Dithering" on Afghanistan

Why Obama has his Priorities Backwards

Former Vice President Cheney has expressed his frustration with Obama’s indecisiveness on whether or not he will send thousands of extra troops to Afghanistan.  Cheney has accused Obama of “dithering” on the decision, while the lives of thousands of our soldiers already serving there are at risk.

Cheney said in his speech last Wednesday night that Obama needs to do “what it takes to win” and that “signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our enemies.”

It didn’t take very long for the Democrat pig pile on Cheney to begin.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, retorted “What Vice President Cheney calls dithering, President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and to the American public. I think we’ve all seen what happens when somebody doesn’t take that responsibility seriously”.

Gibbs continued, “given the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House, including the Vice President’s, for more than 8 months, a resource request filled by President Obama in March.” (Gibbs was referring to the resource request filed by the previous top U.S. Commander, Gen. David McKiernan, to President Bush last year, which was partially granted by Obama this year).

Jack Reed (D-R.I.) chimed in that “Republicans have developed a troubling pattern of blaming President Obama for trying to fix all the problems that they created.”

(Way to contribute to the debate there, Jack. Yep, that comment sure was productive.)

“I think President Obama is entitled to take sufficient time to decide what our long-term role ought to be in Afghanistan” chimed in Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn). “I want him to take the time to get it right”.

Alright, now let me see if I have this straight…

Obama and his lackeys, who have been trying to push his “health care reform” through the Congress and down our throats as quickly as they can, without even allowing time for the Congress (or ourselves) to even read through the more than 1,500 pages of it, continuously gives dire warnings that we are “running out of time” against some invisible deadline.

Yet when it comes to sending aid and reinforcements to our troops, who are under constant threat every day of being shot at, or worse, blown up by either an IED or by some fanatic hell-bent on getting his 72 virgins, he should get to take “sufficient time to decide what our long-term role ought to be in Afghanistan”, as Alexander quoted.

Do I have this right? Am I in the ballpark here?

Are you serious?

President Obama has his priorities backwards.

You’re supposed to be taking your time and carefully analyzing your health care reform, not when you’re making the decision to send our troops the reinforcements they need. The health care reform will permanently affect the vast majority of our nation’s health care if it’s passed. We need to make sure that this is done right the first time, not ram it through just to see how it works. For that matter, we need to decide if this plan is even acceptable to begin with, not just focusing on how it’s going to be paid for. This is what we need to, as Alexander quoted, “take our time and get it right” on.

Shouldn’t this be part of Obama’s “solemn responsibility to the American public”?

On the other hand, with military matters, you need to be able to make decisions quickly. Every day counts. Every day, more troops’ lives are lost while the President ponders (or as Cheney would call it, “dithers” on) his decisions. These are clear and present dangers that the troops face. How we’re going to do long term health care is probably the last thing on their minds right now.   They’re much more concerned with what’s going to happen in the short term; like if that guy over there wearing the heavy jacket really is chilly, or if he’s hiding something sinister under it.

I know what some of you liberals are thinking…

“We need to concentrate on what’s going on here, not fooling around overseas! I need my health care now!”

Let me assure you that here in the U.S., even the worst off among you are much better off than any of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We can take our time with the health care debate. Our troops don’t have that luxury.

The Burlington Coat Factory Riot; Incident Illustrates What's Wrong With America Today

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.”

Unfortunately for the employees of the Burlington Coat Factory in Columbus, Ohio yesterday, at least 1,500 shoppers apparently forgot that little nugget of wisdom.

After a woman, later identified as Linda Brown, pulled up to the store in a rented limousine and loudly announced that she had just won the lottery and would pay for everyone’s purchases of up to $500, shoppers, convinced that they were being treated to free merchandise, began snapping up as many clothes as they could carry and bringing them to the register to have them rung up.

It didn’t take long for the shoppers to call their friends and relatives to inform them of the “great deal”, and in no time, the store was filled with at least 500 shoppers, with another 1000 outside trying to get in. Registers were ringing up purchase after purchase. One customer, Candace Jordan, informed Ms. Brown that she didn’t need new clothes; she needed money to pay the rent. Ms. Brown wrote a check for the requested amount for her on the spot.

I want you to remember Candace Jordan’s name; I’m coming back to her later.

Well, to make a long story short, it turned out that the entire thing was a hoax. Linda Brown had not actually won $1.5 million in the lottery. In fact, she had nothing, but by the time the customers had realized it, she had taken off in her rented limo. Unfortunately for Ms. Brown, she had made a crucial error; if you’re going to use a limo as a getaway vehicle, don’t rip off the driver. The driver turned her in to the police after he had realized that he was not going to get the $900 that she owed him.

What Linda Brown did was reprehensible, and it turns out that she is a repeat offender; this was not her first brush with the law. Likely, she’s going to be spending some time in jail. However, in my opinion the behavior of the customers was even worse than Ms. Brown’s.

You see, when they found out that they weren’t getting free merchandise after all, they decided to not only run out of the store with their ill-gotten gains, but vandalize whatever they couldn’t carry out. It was the looting in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina all over again. They were promised free merchandise, and by God, they were going to get it. The employees of the store lost hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise, not to mention a huge mess to clean up once the riot was over.

The worst part about this riot was that it was completely senseless. These customers technically weren’t ripped off; the purchases weren’t under their names, they were under Linda Brown’s.   It wasn’t their money at stake. The worst that would’ve happened is that they simply wouldn’t have gotten the clothes for free.   If they really wanted them, they only needed to pay for what they actually could have afforded. They did plenty of ripping off of their own though, figuratively and literally.

Linda Brown, as bad as her behavior was, at least has an excuse; the woman is reported to be mentally disturbed to some degree. She has a history of odd behavior, centering on a desperate need for attention. The customers, however, have no excuses.

So what would possess 1,500 people to act like sharks at a feeding frenzy?   It’s simple, really… the promise of free goods combined with the “entitlement” mentality that’s on the rise in America. It’s this mentality that has contributed to the drain of not only our finances but to the rise of the Democrat Party in general, along with the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank (not that I believe people like the above shoppers have any idea who these politicians are) and most notably, the election of Barack Obama.

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that most of those rioting shoppers are Obama voters, or vote Democrat in general. To the Democrats, there’s no better tactic than convincing the masses that not only do they “deserve” or “have the right to” various goods or services, but that they can actually deliver these to them; anything to keep the masses voting the Dems back into power. After years of such indoctrination in our government-run public schools, the media and entertainment industry, the result is incidents like the one in Ohio.

Promise the world, blame the opposition for anything they can’t deliver, keep their delegates angry enough at the Republicans to vote for you again. Rinse and repeat.

The liberals have done their job well.

Now, remember Candace Jordan? The woman who asked for money to pay her rent? In my opinion, she’s the worst moocher of the lot. This woman actually went to the store, not to buy a coat (she said she didn’t need clothes, remember), but for the express purpose of getting free money from someone she thought was a millionaire. Kind of reminds me of the woman who cried to Obama that she needed a house, or more recently, the unruly crowd who thought they were being handed “Obama checks” a few days ago.

Oh well, at least in the end the joke was on her, but like the other shoppers, she didn’t actually lose any money, she only didn’t receive something that she was promised (which she really didn’t earn in the first place). She’s no worse off than when she started.

Perhaps, in her own twisted way, Linda Brown was trying to teach us a lesson about just how selfish and irresponsible we’ve become. Unfortunately, she’s also demonstrated just how gullible we can really be. It’s just a shame that so many people have such a sense of entitlement, that they will learn absolutely nothing from this.

Ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Will Contribute to Lower Military Recruitment

During his speech last Saturday (10/10/09), President Barack Obama reiterated his pledge to end the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which would allow for gays to openly serve in the military.  While gay groups and organizations have expressed frustration at Obama’s lack of progress in achieving this, Obama has assured them that the policy, first passed by Congress under former President Clinton in 1993, will end once he has secured the cooperation of the Pentagon and congressional leaders.

I’m going to be blunt about this. Military recruiters have a hard enough time filling their quotas as it is, especially now. Ending this policy is going to make it tougher.

I’m not suggesting that gays are incapable of serving their country with pride and honor. This has a lot more to do with the psychological factor of heterosexuals than the performance capabilities on the part of homosexuals.

So-called “open minded” straights can brag all they want that they don’t care what homosexuals do behind closed doors, but I’m willing to bet that their tunes would quickly change if they were forced to share that same room with them while they did their business.

As someone who has served in the navy, I can tell you first-hand that I’ve heard conversations between a few of my shipmates bragging about exactly what they would do if they ever found out that a fellow sailor was gay. Trust me, their plans weren’t very nice. Most of those stories would end with their victim doing an unplanned swan dive over the side.

You can’t just force most people to change their psychological wiring, no matter how many new laws you introduce. Laws that are created to control one’s behavior do not change his beliefs, it just suppresses them.

Now, there may be some gays (or “open minded” straights) reading this who will say “So what if the recruitment of straights goes down? They’ll be plenty of gays perfectly willing to take those homophobes’ place! The recruitment numbers will barely change.”

This brings me back to the title of this article, which states that removing this policy will contribute to lower recruitment numbers. It is not the end-all. There are a few other policies that Obama has promised that concern me… policies that will affect the recruitment of both straights and gays.

One of the big attractions for a potential recruit is the promise that upon completion of his service, he will receive a large sum of money for his college tuition, notably the Montgomery G.I. Bill. When I enlisted back in 1990, it was $10,000 (for 4 years of service). Currently, it is now around $47,556.

Guaranteed college money... sounded good to me at the time!

Another big attraction is the guarantee that many of your medical expenses will be taken care of under the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (commonly called “VA Benefits”) for life. Trust me when I tell you that in my experience as both a veteran and as a kid raised in a military family, VA medical care is not as great as it sounds… I prefer the private sector.  However, to most young recruits who have little to no military experience, this sounds like a good deal. It certainly did to me when I signed up.

Here’s the problem… President Obama has pledged that not only would he like to see a “single-payer” health care system in place (a government system in which everyone’s health care is provided for by taxpayer dollars, a practice embraced in socialist countries), but he has also stated that he wants the government to provide the funds for a student’s college education. After all, as his supporters would say, “everyone has the right to an education”.

What happens if these policies were actually put into place? The fact is, there are plenty of young folks who join the military not out of a sense of pride, duty and honor to serve their country, but because they’re getting ready to graduate from school, they don’t know what they’re going to do with their lives, and they want a chance to get some money for college. The military seemed to be a good solution to that problem.

I hate to admit it, but this was true in my case. Patriotism and a sense of duty weren’t instilled into me until years after I had joined at the age of 19.

Your typical teenage candidate, when approached by a recruiter, would probably be thinking along the lines of “Why should I join the military and risk getting killed for something I’ll automatically be getting as a civilian under President Obama?”

As if I hadn’t made enough enemies already, the last policy that I’m about to discuss will probably have our fine servicemen and women ready to form a lynch mob against me.

President Obama has also made a promise back in February to give a military pay raise of about 2.9 %. If anyone deserves a pay raise, it’s our service members, especially the ones serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, wanting to give someone what you think they deserve is a lot different than what is actually practical

Where is this extra money going to come from? True, Obama claims that it will come from cuts in wasteful military spending, such as on what he claims are “Cold War-era weapons systems we don’t use” (I’m assuming that he’s referring to nuclear missiles), but who determines what we need or don’t need? Some would argue that it is those very missiles that prevent us from being attacked to begin with, but Obama has pledged to reduce our arsenal, an ideal that awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize.

Too bad North Korea, China, Iran and Russia don’t share those dreams.

Just as in the private sector, when you’re forced to raise the minimum wage for employees, you’re going to need to sacrifice something in order to achieve that goal and still maintain the bottom line, whether it means cutting programs, services… or employees.

I wouldn’t be so concerned about the pay raise if our economy was booming, but unless you’ve been hiding in a cave for the past year like a certain Saudi terrorist leader has, you know that we’re not doing so hot right now. I hate to suggest this, but the pay raise may have to wait.

Let the accusations of “homophobe” and “Obama-basher” begin.

Japanese Airline to Passengers; Use Restroom before You Fly

In the event of an emergency landing, dumping excess fuel to lighten the weight of the aircraft was at one time a standard procedure. Now, a Japanese airliner is asking their passengers to do some dumping of their own before they even take off.

A new policy introduced by All Nippon Airways (ANA) has encouraged their passengers to pay a visit to the restroom before boarding their planes. The reason? No, it’s not because their restrooms were removed… not yet, anyway. The logic behind it is that passengers with empty bladders will be lighter, which would add less weight to the plane, which in turn, would burn less fuel. The result is… you guessed it; lower carbon emissions. The things people will do to save the planet. I can’t help but wonder what the penalty is for using the restroom on the plane.

On second thought, never mind.  I don’t want to know.

While I was reading this story, I looked at the picture that was provided on the website. As I observed the blue and white airliners, I couldn’t help but wonder; wouldn’t it have made more sense to simply have scrapped all that heavy paint off? How many pounds would be shed? However much weight would have actually been lost, it has to be more than anything the passengers could have… shed.

Unless, of course, one of the jetliners was transporting a sumo wrestling team to their next meet, but that’s another matter.

Believe it or not, this actually isn’t the most bizarre story I’ve heard about our attempts to lower our carbon emissions. That honor goes to the Australians, who were trying to figure out how to genetically re-engineer their native kangaroos (by replacing their stomachs with a cow’s stomach) so that they wouldn’t, to put it politely, pass as much gas. One scientist even urged Australians to eat kangaroo burgers as opposed to cow burgers, since a kangaroo’s flatulence emits more carbon into the atmosphere than a cow’s. Result… fewer kangaroos poisoning the atmosphere with their… ahem… farts.

Seriously, how many more stories like these are we going to see until these global warming nut jobs are laughed out of the public media? To be honest, I hope we see a lot more of them. The more stories like these are aired, the more people will realize just how ridiculous these folks are. I can hardly wait for the next one, keep ‘em coming, you tree-hugging wackos.

And remember… save the planet; eat more kangaroo.
